Rinks and Results For Season 2009-10

The Dunn Medal

The Official Match Report - The Dunn Medal
On a bright and sunny Sunday 64 of our club members and a few "fans" rolled up at Hamilton
to fight it out for the honour of winning the Dunn Medal.
As you all know the Club had adopted a new 1 day 4 end format for the competition this year,
comprising 2 sections of 8 teams, the winners of each section playing a 4 end final.

There were no less than 11 call offs for the event, some in plenty of time, and a few not!
Organising substitutes was a challenge,
with all but a handful of the club being asked in one way or another to help out.
The Match Secretary would like to use this report to thank a few people,
firstly all those (young and old) who stepped in to play,
Agnes for her help recruiting a few ladies and making phone calls,
and the Harbour Master for his help and interference
(you just sort the teams he said...............,
I don't need to see them he says..............,
I think you could change a few things.........,
here are my changes............................
I have taken the liberty of passing them to the webmaster as I knew you would agree with me …………..!!).

And I can't believe he thought the Match Secretary hadn't won the Dunn Medal before,
imagine,
surely all the good curlers in the club have won the Dunn Medal,
is that not right Willie Baird!!

One substitute arrangement deserves a special mention.
Alan Roe noticed early on that he would be unable to make it,
so he used his organisational skills to arrange for Stuart Raeburn to take his place.
Stuart then used his organisational skills to arrange a trip to the Winter Fair in Canada,
and duly departed on Tuesday, the only ice on his mind being served by the air hostess.
It transpires that Stuart had arranged for his mother to get a substitute
(I think you can see where this is heading already),
but she was tied up curling at Greenacres so she used her organisational skills
to arrange for David Raeburn to get a substitute.
The long and the short of it was the Match Secretary took no chances,
and on hearing Stuart was away he arranged a substitute while the other events were unfolding.
The Match Secretary has arranged for Stuart to receive some organisational coaching from Tommy Campbell,
for anyone who has read his excellent tour report will know Tommy can organise a piss up in a brewery.

If you are still reading I guess you will be wanting to know the scores.

With the section games all played out the final was to be a match between Margaret Brown and Helen King

(the latter having dealt the first defeat to any EKHCC team involving the Match Secretary this season,
has his luck finally run out?).

A keenly fought contest came down to last stones,
with Helen one shot down she played a draw under pressure to lie just behind the tee.
Margaret played to draw onto the face of Helen's stone,
and was looking good coming into the house when her stone suddenly changed handle
and ran a couple of inches past the shot, giving a one to Helen and a peel.
To resolve the deadlock a draw the shot was needed, with both Helen and Margaret drawing the four foot,
but it was Helen who was closest to the button.
As a result Helen and her team of Michael Murdoch, Henry Quinn and Willie Dykes
are the 2009-2010 winners of the Dunn Medal.
Runners up were Margaret and her team of Alison Taylor, Alison Lambie and David Raeburn.
In the end a fine day outside was matched by a fine days curling inside,
and numerous comments that that it had been an enjoyable one.
